The Infant Painting Tutorial
A step by step tutorial on painting’ baby Yoda’ aka the Child from the Mandalorian tv show.
You will need:
Citadel paints
- Death World Forest Green
- Gorthor Brown
- Ogryn Camo
- Nurgling Green
- Coelia Greenshade
- Baneblade Brown
- Karak Stone
- Cadian Flesh
- Reikland Fleshshade
- Black,
- White,
- Paint on Gloss Varnish ( I used Vajello)
First, start with light sanding to remove any pimples from the supports.
Then base the figure in Gorthor Brown and Death Forest Green.
Next, drybrush the Ogryn Camo on top of the flesh parts.
Next, apply a light wash of Coelia Greenshade to the flesh areas.
Once dry, a light drybrush of Coelian Flesh around the eyes, inner ear and back of the ear. Don’t worry if this comes off too heavy; it can be softened in the next step.
Then, dry brush with Nurgling Green, focusing on the highest points.
Next, we will focus on the robes. First, touch up the Gothor Brown wear needed. Then dry brush with Bladebane Brown. Finally, take care around the flesh areas.
Final step for the robes; a light dry brush with Karak Stone onto the highest points. And the robe is done.
Baby Yoda is nearly done, with just a few finishing touches.
For the eyes:
Paint white/ivory dots in the corners of each eye. Then fill the eye in with black. Once dry, a mix of Gothor Brown and black was applied for the brown Iris he has. Then a big black circle in the middle for the pupil.
The next step is a white dot on the eye to add the ‘light reflections’, and the eyes are done.
A light wash of Reikland Fleshsahde was applied to the inner ear just to make the flesh tone pop.
Seal the figure with a matte varnish spray. Once cured, apply the paint on gloss varnish to the eyes and lips to make them look moist.

The frog.
Based coated in black and followed with Kantor Blue. I use the side of the brush to paint this area, as the bristles only then pick up the raised detail. While wet, a highlight of Macragge Blue was used for the spots and a harsher highlight of white. Once sealed, a coat of gloss paint on varnish was used and dabbed off with a finger to soften the effect.
